Topographically Trapped Waves Around South America With Periods Between 40 and 130 Days in a Global Ocean Reanalysis

نویسندگان

چکیده

The South American continental slope hosts a variety of topographic waves. We use 27-year-long global ocean reanalysis (1/12° Spatial resolution) to examine trapped waves (TWs) around America at periods ranging from 40 130 days. propagate the Equatorial Pacific Tropical Atlantic (22°S) with phase velocities between 1.8 and 7 m/s according local background characteristics, such as stratification, steepness, latitude, mean flow shelf width. Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) plays key role in forcing TWs two ways (a) through an oceanic connection implying equatorial Kelvin reaching western Coast (b) atmospheric teleconnection enhancing southerly winds south-east Pacific. Furthermore, winds, not necessarily linked MJO, modulate trigger specific locations, Brazil-Malvinas Confluence. Trapped impact along-shore currents: during positive near-surface is enhanced by about 0.1 m/s.

Around the Lab in 40 Days

In previous papers 1] we have argued that the LAAS architecture 1 is one of the most suited for mobile robot control. This statement may seem over-optimistic, not to say pretentious and unveriiable. After all, can we compare architectures? can we set up benchmarks? or can we measure how good an architecture is compared to another? An architecture deenes organization principles, integration meth...

Ocean Global Warming Impacts on the South America Climate

The global Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Model (OLAM) model was used to estimate the impacts of the global oceanic warming on the climate projections for the 21st Century focusing on the South America region. This new model is able to represent simultaneously the global and regional scales using a refining grid approach for the region of interest. First, the model was run for a 31-year control period c...

Distinctive climate signals in reanalysis of global ocean heat content

[1] The elusive nature of the post-2004 upper ocean warming has exposed uncertainties in the ocean’s role in the Earth’s energy budget and transient climate sensitivity. Here we present the time evolution of the global ocean heat content for 1958 through 2009 from a new observationbased reanalysis of the ocean. Volcanic eruptions and El Niño events are identified as sharp cooling events punctua...

Diffraction of ocean waves around a hollow cylindrical shell structure

In recent years, there has been renewed interest in problems of diffraction and radiation of ocean waves around structures, in relation to “green” power generation by Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. In this paper we present a first-order analytical solution for the diffraction of ocean waves around a hollow cylindrical shell structure suspended in an ocean of finite depth. By revisiting...
